You know… that Blog?

SADS, anyone?

Written By: Jenn - Oct• 15•09

I’m a little melancholy lately, and I think it shows a bit in the way I’ve only been keeping up on my haiku and sometimes a couple other memes. Every blogger/writer goes through blah periods, and this one appears to be mine. I just don’t “feel” the words coming, and writing is a bit of a pain.

It happens every year for me, around this time – I suffer in varying degrees from SADS (Seasonal Affective Disorder Syndrome) which is a big fancy way of saying I get a little depressed when the days start getting shorter and daylight is fleeting. I know it’s coming though, and can usually do things to thwart it – making sure I get outside in the sunshine and get fresh air, etc. This year has been a tough one for me because our summer in Southern Ontario was so pathetic – it rained pretty much the whole month of July, we had a brief summer in August, and then the rain bloody came back and hasn’t left since. This steals my favourite season away from me, and gives me premature SADS – I love autumn! It’s so quick to pass anyway, so when it’s ruined by this miserable rain and unseasonably cold temperatures, what’s a girl to do?

Retail therapy helps a bit, but while I have unlimited cheques (checks for you Yanks), the bank account doesn’t roll that way. Bother.

On Friday the Hubby and I (Ok, it was just me, but he usually agrees with me) decided that we were going to whisk the kids away to Florida in a couple weeks; bank account and other responsibilities be damned. Last year at this time we took Wee One with us and did the same thing – the Teen couldn’t come and miss that much school at that time. This year, we’re all going. The Teen and I will be able to do our work from the hotel room – I just love that she can submit her homework to her teachers via email – and I will do my regular online work the same as I could here, only I’ll be barefoot and sunlight saturated rather than swaddled in sweaters, sweats, socks and slippers.

CONS

– Kids will miss 7 school days
– I’ll miss 3 really vital rehearsals
– Duh. Money
– More wear and tear on the van
– It inconveniences my folks, who have to look after the assorted menagerie in our absence

PROS

– I. MUST. HAVE. SUN.
– I. WILL. HAVE. SUN.
– I. MUST. HAVE. SUN.
– I. WILL. HAVE. SUN.
– I. MUST. HAVE. SUN.

Verdict: We’re going.

End result: You’ll have a happier blogger to look forward to, and I won’t have to kill anyone. Win-Win.

WOOT…sometimes that’s what needed. Throw caution to the wind, bank accounts be damned and take care of yourself. When you do that, all around you benefit, family and friends included. So ordered says the judge – GO! :)

  3. You are driving all the way to Florida? From Canada? Whew! More Power to you! LOL. The biggest road trip I have made thus far was from Alabama to California right before we moved here to Hawaii. [*Flew out Of California to Hawaii.*] And even that wasn’t so bad because we stopped in Louisiana for a week to see my parents before the big move!

I feel you on the SADS though. In 2004 I moved from Texas up to Washington state and Oh Boy was that a change in weather AND scenery. I really bummed me out, bad because I had never lived anywhere with no sun [*being a Southern Girl 99% of my life!*] I know next year when we move back to Washington it is going to be a pain to adjust, but I don’t care about that because I will be off this rock and on the mainland again! Woo Freakin’ Hoo!

I hope you guys enjoy the trip and soak up plenty of sun in Florida!!

Yep, it’s an easy 2 day drive, or a crazy 24 hour straight through drive, which we’d never do (again). We like having our own vehicle down there. I know Florida as well as I know Ontario by now – we’ve been dozens of times! I used to fly down for a weekend when I was single, too – it was great fun! :)

Good for you. Sometimes we just have to “bite the bullet” and do it. I am hoping that you will come back refreshed and with a renewed spirt. Happy Huggs.

Not to make light of your mood, but buying a dozen doughnuts would be retail therapy. You might want to try it! :) Just don’t eat them all in one sitting.

Good for you; you guys will have a great time. But, just one thing: where is the con that reads “ShaMoo can’t come”?!? Um, wait, maybe that’s a “Pro” on your list….well it’s a CON on mine!! I need sunshine too!!!!

Jenn — I suffer from SADS, too (although not since I’ve been in Hawaii!). We are planning to move back to the Pacific Northwest and I already told Amoeba that we must have at least one full spectrum light bulb in the place where I most often sit. Check them out. I’ve always kept one in a lamp on my desk at school and in my computer lamp at home. They work — not quite as well as the sun, but much better than nothing at all.

  7. Yay Florida – I am so jealous! I’ve been 3 times and I loved it all that sunshine is lovely – remember to pack lots of suncream though! Surely you’re not driving there though – that’s a long way!!

The rains that keep us the Evergreen state also take a toll on my mental state as well. I swear I could nap every day, but I won’t.

I wonder if vitamin D in a bottle helps. Or one of those lamp-y things, for when you return.
