Happy Birthday Mom (and ARGH!!)

Written By: Jenn - May• 18•10

First, Sorry to the 3 lovely folks who stopped by for an early peek at TOMORROW’S Haiku – I really should not work so late at night. I set it to publish today instead of properly tomorrow. I’ve yanked it, and it will REpublish after midnight tonight. Sheeeesh.

Now:

Happy 64+1 birthday to my Mom!

Why did I state it like that? Well, Mom is having some “issues” with her big birthday. The biggest issue is that our lovely Government refers to her monthly pension/stipend as “Old Age Pension”, and, well, that royally ticks her off. ROYALLY. So much so that she refuses to acknowledge that she has reached this milestone, and threatened the very lives of her loved ones if we so much as considered throwing her a birthday bash. We know she means it, so in the interest of preserving our own hides, there will be no party for Mom. I love a good party, so this annoys me, but it’s her day, so who am I to celebrate… wait. *sigh* No, I won’t do it as much as I want to.

Instead, my brother and his kids and my husband and I and our kids will be joining my folks for a very low-key dinner this evening before I run off to a board meeting and rehearsal. BLAH, sez I.

Of course, she couldn’t (and wouldn’t) say no to a slightly better than normal gift, could she? She’s no dummy.

Your mom is a little more than a year and a half older than I.

I’ve been collecting Social Security since I turned 62. Call it whatever you like – I aint turning it down.

My mom turned 89 on Sunday, and is doing great. Even better, 89 is a Fibonacci Number!

    Cheers!

Happy Birthday to your mom!! ( My mom has apparently been adding 8 years to her age for years, so people would tell her how good she looks! Two sad things – A, until she needed to renew her passport my brother and I thought she was 8 years older. B, she really looks good for her actual age!)

aww Happy Birthday to your Mom!! My mother, in contrast, is looking forward to her 65th. Apparently because her pension will be bigger than my Dad’s. lol!!

Thanks for the “potted plant” offer. I’ll totally look you up next time I’m up your way. From the sounds of things we’d have a lot to talk about. :)

(And yes, the “potted plant” thing is definitely a family “ism” and not something you’ve missed!!)

    Til next time. :)

Yep, BD celebrations are for the one having the birthday, but certainly don’t rule out a most fabulous gift.

My mom always answered the question of her age the same: “Over 21,” and was never one to enjoy being sung ‘Happy Birthday’ to. Ever. Loved parties, hated the birthday.

However, a small family celebration at a fine restaurant surprised us all when my friend knew the waiter who just happened to be a singer with the Washington Opera. Friend casually mentioned to him that it was my mom’s birthday and before anyone realized what was happening, he was serenading us with a moving rendition of the song in his powerful and glorious tenor that soared to the heavens. It was such a grand performance, she couldn’t help but be awed. Memorable birthday, that.
