Care Package for the Teen

Written By: Jenn - Jul• 24•09

It hasn’t even been a full 2 weeks until Sunday, but it feels like my first born has been gone for a very long time. She called me on my birthday anniversary and sounded very on edge. Seems that the weather has been lousy, and half the girls in her dorm have been crying at the drop of a hat. Her friend Paige from up north cries every day, she said. Some of the girls are being awful, and the Teen said she wants to choke them to death smack them. I told her she needs to cut them some slack; not every one is a “seasoned traveler” like she is, and the ones who are weepy or behaving badly are probably really homesick and just letting their frustrations out on the people around them.

On the other hand, we all know what happens when you get a bunch of females together in a pack… there’s no getting away from it. A bunch of 14 and 15 year old hormonal teenagers is bound to be a little… er… dicey at times. 6 weeks is a long time.

Because my girl sounded a little homesick herself (although she’d never admit to it) I decided to send her a care package to brighten her day. I had to keep in mind that she has only her duffel bag with her, so whatever I sent her had to be on the small side for packing up to come home.

With the weather being crappy, she was lamenting not bringing a book, so that was a no brainer. One book… check. A butterfly craft and little note from her sister (not shown)… check. Nice long letter full of hugs and kisses from mom… check. She forgot to pack her camera, which is getting on the old side and is too big to sit comfortably in a pocket, so I decided to send her my little camera as a gift, and the battery charger for it… the camera has a few snaps of her sister, dog and cat on it that she can show her new friends. Throw in some gum and some pictures I took recently… check, check and check. Perfect!

Wrap it all up…

I will need to do a bit of protective wrapping with some packing tape, of course. Scotch tape will only do so much don’tchaknow.

A bit of a confession… the package was already wrapped before I remembered that I wanted to take pictures, so I “recreated” it (which is why the butterfly craft and letters weren’t shown). The camera I sent her is identical, only in black, and the book was a new one by a new author I picked up at Walmart yesterday. Along with that cute pink point n’ shoot, which I guess I’ll have to keep for myself, since I just gave my black one to the Teen… ;) She’ll be happy to get her package, I’m sure. I guess I’d better get to the post office to send it!

  3. My teen (a boy) is away for five weeks — and I wish he were a little more homesick! I guess I could try to argue that I have raised a confident and secure young man(sounds like you have raised a girl like this). And he definitely is in favor of care packages. But missing mom? Not so much.

What a great Mommy! I have to say that when I asked my eldest, who graduated from college recently, what her highlight of college was, she didn’t hesitate: “Your care packages, of course.” A no-brainer, I know. Your baby’s gonna love you even more!

  6. Thanks, Jenn, for your kind words. Yes, when all is said and done I’m thrilled for my son and excited that he can plunge in to new adventures without any homesick pangs. Doesn’t stop me from missing him though!

And hey — I’m sharpening my mad haiku skillz!
