You know… that Blog?

Social media, social spam

I’ve got a new pet peeve; “Trending” on Facebook. I suppose in their bid to take over the world, Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg figure that adding #hashtags and “Trending” topics will keep them more useful and relevant for the masses. Only… I really hate dislike it.

I don’t tend to use hashtags on Facebook, unless I’m doing so sarcastically (I know; ME, Sarcastic??), and frankly, I don’t care what other people are talking about on Facebook. I use Facebook as a tool to connect with people I already know, and keep in touch. Touch without having to touch? Yeah, that. Used that way, it’s a fabulous tool! But more and more, FB is adding nonsense to their site, in a never-ending, visually upsetting mess.

Facebook used to be so clean. I don’t mean subject-wise, either. I mean clutter-free, and easy to view. I can’t even imagine how hard it is now for people who are visually impaired!

I’ve been reading through threads here in Facebook’s “Help” section. It has hundreds of posts asking “How do I get rid of Trending”, and – no surprise – Facebook isn’t responding to these questions at all. I fear it’s here to stay, like anything Facebook figures they can monetize.

If it’s here to stay, I at least hope Facebook listens to the masses of people who really dislike it, and offer a way to either turn it off/opt out, or make it possible to minimize it.

By the way, if you dislike it, I encourage you to post your comments in that thread, and also write about it on your own blog, in your own Facebook profile, and elsewhere.

If I want to see what people are talking about, I’ll go to Twitter. I don’t want, don’t need, and won’t ever use “Trending” on Facebook.

*huff*
