What to buy the man who has everything?

Written By: Jenn - Sep• 22•09

My father turns 65 this weekend. There will be a big family & friends party, a sure-to-be-gorgeous cake done by none other than our friend Doodle Cakes, and lots of food.

I just have no idea what to get my Dad. The man has everything. It’s a special birthday, so clothes won’t do it. Tools, no. Besides, his closet is overflowing and he has every tool known to man! My parents already travel extensively and have every possible accoutrement for that, and due to recent health issues he is unable to go anywhere for the next 6 months anyway. (you may recall they’d been planning on a trip to Italy this month, but they had to cancel). He’s not a jewelry kinda guy. They go to the theatre often, and have seen everything worth seeing or already have tickets to what they haven’t seen. You see where I’m going with this.

Well, I could get them a weekend away. Maybe in wine country, complete with winery tours. Niagara on the Lake is gorgeous, and with the colours just about to turn, a weekend in early to mid October might be really relaxing. Trouble there is that my mother gave the “look” when I suggested it, which means it isn’t something that she might enjoy just now. She, of course, still has my grandmother to look after. Gran’s 98th birthday is on Tuesday, in fact. I would be left to take care of her, which is nothing I haven’t done before.

But I digress. Does anyone out there have a really special idea for a gift for this man??

Not a good picture of Dad. This was taken a couple years ago when they spent his birthday in Italy with friends. Why don’t I have recent pictures of him?? Best get that fixed.

I love my dad. He and I are like peas in a pod. We think the same way, we love our children ferociously, and believe that family comes first. We are protective (sometimes too much so) of people we love. We try to “fix things”, right wrongs, and rescue people in distress (whether they want it or not). A standing joke in our family is that my father goes into “Super Hero Mode” whenever one of us is in any sort of difficulty. He’s a great man.

Help me think of a great present for this great man.

Oh, that’s a tough one! I find men so hard to buy for, especially dads. I’ll put my thinking cap on and let you know if I come up with anything. Can’t wait to see pictures of his b-day cake!!

Humm. I agree, that’s a tough one, not knowing your Dad and all. One year I gave my Father a beautiful handbound leather journal. I typed up some questions and put them in a cute little jar so he could pick one and write about it.

He loved it. But we are both sentimental that way.

When he passes, this will be one of my prized possessions.

Not much help to you, I know. Sorry. When they reach a certain age, they just plain have everything they need! Good Luck.

If it were me I would get him a gift certificate at one of his favorite stores, like Safeway or Home Depot or something.

Well… I would have asked this question at least a month ago for starters… BUT… I find when a person has absolutely EVERYTHING and wants for NOTHING that some kind of memory book or a poem or something like that … something from the heart that involves memories you share. Sounds like that should be pretty easy since you are so close and share a lot! But the other thing that is always nice is some sort of “service” gift. Has you father ever had a MANicure and pedicure? Or maybe a massage? Maybe you could do a father/daughter day out to get it done and have lunch! Something that he’s never experienced before. Since health is an issue, is there something around the house that you know he’s WISHING he could get done, but can’t? DO it for him. Or pay someone to do it for him. Does his shed need cleaning out? The garage? Something like that…. You’ll figure it out — but I would go in that direction.

What about a scrapbook, pictures of your family through out the years.

We made a cd/dvd for my dad with photos from his life, including his kids, wife, friends, grandkids, neighbours, all from memories of his life – birthday parties, weddings, xmas, halloween, any photos we found with him in it was part of that cd and we set it to his favorite music (for the background music) and we played it at his birthday party – he loved it so much and when he passed away – it was the greatest keepsake to have because we play it all the time whenever we miss him and it brings us joy knowing that he had such a fulfilling life and we were able to capture that joy on film. Good luck with your gift ideas!
